Article: Homeopathic Drugs Not Test Or Approved By FDA

Most homeopathic drugs are not tested by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) – although many consumers often don't realize it. However, that realization is changing after the FDA's recent warnings on homeopathic products such as Zicam and Hydroxycut.

Over 800 drugs caused serious side effects in 200

The FDA says that over 800 homeopathic drugs caused serious health problems in 2008. However, many consumers often don't realize that, while generally less potent than prescription drugs, the side effects from homeopathic drugs can be very dangerous – especially when taken in conjunction with prescription drugs. The likely reason for the confusion is that homeopathic drugs are generally labeled as being natural and therefore, many wrongly believe they are not dangerous. However, the FDA's recent warnings about certain Zicam Cold Remedy and Hydroxycut products, also considered to be homeopathic, may prove otherwise.

Zicam / Hydroxycut

The FDA has received approximately 130 reports of Zicam users losing their sense of smell (medically known as anosmia) and has told the manufacturer, Arizona based Matrixx Initiatives, to stop marketing three of their products which contain zinc gluconate until the Administration can do further testing. Those products include Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Nasal Swabs and Swabs in Kids' Size – the latter of which has already been discontinued. The FDA's recent consumer warning about Hydroxycut weight loss products and their link to serious liver damage prompted New York based manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, to recall many of its products in May 2009.

As lawsuits mount against both manufacturers, many consumers are questioning the safety of other natural / homeopathic drugs. However, finding out more is often difficult as the FDA doesn't regulate the thousands of homeopathic products on the market.
